Chapter Five: The Unknown

Rehan

Uncle and Ruhani stayed back at the hospital that night. Since there were only two attendants allowed with the patient, uncle asked me to go home and get some rest. I was wide awake from last two days and the lack of sleep had slowly begun to take me over.

Again, I couldn’t sleep that night. Information that I had received from the Doctor was creeping me out. I kept thinking about all the possibilities that could have landed Tanya in such a condition, but how hard I tried, I wasn’t landing upon anything.

Then, my mind rested on the thought of the conversation I had with Ruhani, about the diary I had seen in Tanya’s room. I tried to searching for it, but unfortunately, I couldn’t find it.

Someone must have misplaced it. I still remember the chaos when the girls told me that Tanya wasn’t opening the door.

We had to break the door open. Everyone was horrified to see Tanya lying on the floor in a pool of blood. The blood was still oozing out of her cut on her wrist with force. There was a diary in her hand. Then I had thrown it on the bed and rushed her to hospital. But that diary was nowhere to be seen now.

How can a diary vanish suddenly?  Now, it felt like that diary, it had something that someone doesn’t want to let us know. Whoever did this, must be responsible for Tanya’s condition.

I got up early in morning with a severe headache. My head was throbbing as if someone is hammering on it. I somehow managed to get up of the bed. Had a cool shower waking my senses up, got dressed and then headed downstairs for the breakfast.

At the table, it was only Ruhani waiting for me there.

"Is uncle still at hospital?" I asked her.

"Yes,” she replied, helping me to serve my plate, “he said he'll wait until Tanya wakes up. After you left, a few hours later, he managed to convince me to go home. I refused but he insisted so I had to leave him there alone."

"Okay, now I think we should go there and send him home,” I said, “He needs some rest too. I don't want him to mess with his health."

"Yeah… Hey Rehan, did you find the diary?" Ruhani asked hitting spoon on an already empty plate.

"No, not yet. But I'll make sure to find it out soon." I replied. I felt something amiss, but ignored and went ahead with the day.

While in the car going to the hospital Ruhani was acting a bit weird today. She was fidgeting a lot and her breaths were heavy enough to be heard out. Was it an effect of jet lag as she said or was it something else?

I parked the car at a comfortable place. While we were on the way to enter inside the hospital, my phone buzzed.

I frowned. It was a private number. I wasn’t receiving any good vibes from it.

"Hello, who's this?" I answered.

"You don’t have to know that,” said an unknown voice, “Just listen carefully to what I’ve to say. If you want to find out what's the reason behind Tanya's condition.”

My heart fell to my knee and my brain was jammed for a second. It took me a while find my own voice.

"Wha…what?” I stammered, “What do you know about it?"

"I know everything you might want to know, just do as I say else you'll never find out who was behind all this."

"How can I know you are telling me the truth?”

“You just have to trust me because you have no other choice. And don't try to find out who I am. If you do, I'll eventually come to know. I am watching all of you twenty-four by seven and believe me, things can go really ugly.” I tried to look around if someone wasn’t  pranking me.

I paused for a few minutes. I just wanted to believe it was a prank call but the voice was so grave that I was forced to have second thoughts and that the person warning was speaking all genuine.

 "Alright. I won't." I affirmed.

"Good,” said the voice, “Now search the diary immediately. You will have all your answers in it. And after you do, I’ll call you back.”

He hung  up on me, without even letting me ask how he knew about the diary.

"Who was it?" Ruhani asked, sounding concerned.

"I don't know. It was a private number,” I replied shrugging.

"Ohh,” she said as expressions on her face changed, “what did he or she say?" She looked tensed as she  tried to study expressions over my face.

"He said that he's watching us all and he knows what had happened the night before the wedding."

"Oh my god! Did he say anything else? Who’s that person? Did he tell you anything Rehan?" She shooted an array of questions at me.

"Yeah, he asked me to find the diary. He said everything I need to know is in that diary." Her face dropped and expressions changed as I said that.

"Any clue where to find it?" she asked, “Did he mention anything?” fear could be easily read on her face. But what did she have to fear? My mind wasn’t working

"No. He just hung up before I could say anything else.” I replied as we headed into the hospital.
