Chapter Thirty Six

CHAPTER THIRTY SIX

Parnika takes a long breath feeling the fresh air of her homeland as she steps on the land from the flight. She wanted to surprise Jay and confess her feelings for him in person hence she had planned a surprise for him. She heads to their usual sweet shop and to get Jay’s favourite sweet.

Kaka, aadho kilo gajar no halwo aapo ne. Gift wrap karjo please.( Uncle, Please pack half kg of gajar halwa and do gift wrap the box.)” She takes the box and places it in her hangbag carefully. Cheerfully she hops back into her taxi which was waiting for her outside while she made a halt at the sweet shop.

Her excitement was knowing no bounds today. She just desperately wanted to just go back and hug him tight. The Taxi halts at the gate as she drops off. Instead of going back home first to keep the luggage, she decides to see Jay first. She had been waiting all this time and now it felt as if she couldn’t just wait anymore. She walks to the porch and looks for the keys. To her surprise she finds none, it was very unusual for Jay to not hide keys for her beneath the porch in their usual hiding place. She ignores the clue and rings the bell.

Jay was cleaning up after the breakfast while Miral was helping him with the dishes.Who’d be at this early hour in the morning? he wonders as the doorbell rings. A girl just hops on him and hugs him tight before even he could see her face as he opens the door. He was about to push her off when he realises her smell. It’s her, she’s back. I can’t believe it. Why is so happy? First she throws me out of her life and comes back after a year and hugs me, wow! He slowly pulls out from her embrace as she looks at him confused.

It was very unusual for Jay to not hug Parnika back and just pull out from her embrace like this.  What happened? Did I make a mistake? Why is he behaving like this? Questions started popping inside Parnika’s mind. Before she could think of anything else or react she hears a voice from the kitchen. “Who’s it darling?” A female voice from the kitchen makes her heart just instantly crack and crumble into pieces. Whose voice is this? She doesn’t sound like Shriya to me. Could it be Anjani? How can she do this to me? How can she betray me? Anger starts to build up inside her and suddenly vanishes with an imaginary ‘poof’ as Miral comes into view.

Miral comes forward and wraps her arm around Jay’s arm as she looked at a beautiful girl on her doorstep early morning. Miral wondered if it was one of Jay’s exes as the expression on her face seeing Miral was making her jealousy quite obvious. Jay had removed all the pictures of him and Parnika from the house when Anjani had left her. He just wanted to be done with everyone in his life for once. He felt all their caring was just nothing but a mere formality and showbiz. Miral had no idea about Parnika being back into her life.

“Miral, this is Pari, and Pari this is Miral, my girlfriend.” Jay introduces both the girls who now had an equal ghastly expression on their faces as if both had seen a ghost. Jay pulls his hand from Miral’s grip and heads back as if nothing has happened. He just heads back upstairs to get ready for work.

Down at the doorstep, Parnika was shocked as Jay didn’t even invite her inside the house this time. But the presence of Miral, her old arch rival as his girlfriend in his house was a bigger and probably a devastating shock for Parnika.

Before Miral could pass a sassy comment, she just runs back to her house which was just adjacent to the Shah residence. Miral feels this was a really easy victory as both Jay didn’t even acknowledge Parnika’s presence, as if it doesn’t even bother him at all. As Miral was about to close the door, Jay climbs downstairs and heads for the work. Miral just keeps looking at him as he just walks out without even saying goodbye. It was the first time that he didn’t even bother to say goodbye.

Miral until how just had a hunch about situations between the duo being tense but little she had known it was really bad. She just smiles thinking that no matter for how long, she could enjoy her life in peace. As she goes on back to her room, her phone rings. “Yes Doctor… Yes… Sure, please!... Yes I’ll be there in an hour.” She places her phone back on the table and gets her files and other things ready.

Parnika had never imagined Miral being with Jay in her worst nightmares. She just so wanted to charge at her and drag her out of Jay’s life. But it wasn’t Miral that was hurting her, it was Jay. His cold reaction on seeing her back. He didn’t even welcome. Not even a hug. What have I done wrong to deserve this? Her mind was constantly buzzed with such questions when her phone rings.

“Hello, Dr Parnika here…” She picks up the phone.

“Hello Pari! Welcome back! How are you my child?” Dr Chunawala’s voice from other side calms her sobs.

“I am fine Doctor, thanks! Just landed and haven’t even unpacked anything yet.”

“Uh Pari, I know you are just back but this was something couldn’t wait any longer. I am sorry but can you come to hospital in an hour? Don’t worry, it’s just for the meeting. It’s really important and without your word I can’t continue further.” Dr Chunawala’s voice made it evident that its something urgent and important.

“Sure! I’ll just change and be there in an hour. Don’t worry, anyway no one is waiting for me here.” She hangs up the call before the sob could escape her mouth.

She walks down the hospital corridor reaching there before time. The familiar smells of cleansing chemicals and other medicines fill her nose as she passes by the patient wards upwards to her cabin. She pushes the door open with the name plate, ‘Dr. Parnika Mehta ( MBBS, MS(Neurosurgery)) written on it. She smiles looking at her cabin. It was just like she had left it. She couldn’t believe it had been a year being away from this place. She sits on the chair diving deep reminiscing all the memories when there’s a knock on the door. “Come In please!” She calls out wondering who’d be here at this moment. She didn’t inform anyone about her arrival back to work yet. She wasn’t in mindset to attend any patient right now. A smile spreads across her face as she finds Dr Chunawala opening the door. But the smile drops when she finds Miral following behind.

“Please sit here doctor.” She hands over her chair to the doctor who refuses and sits on the patient side of the table. “This is your chair dear and I am here for something else. The nature of this matter being so urgent I couldn’t afford to waste even a single day.” Dr chunawala really hated getting the environment serious but the pin drop silence and the depth in his voice was shouting ‘it’s serious’”

“What happened sir? I have never seen you this serious before. No wonder you called me right at this moment.” Parnika leans in resting her hands on the table as Dr Chunawala opens the file. He starts explaining the details and the plans decided to Parnika who was just as serious now as her senior. Miral just sits beside on another chair and keeps looking at both of them shower a gazillion jargons and talk in almost indecipherable language. She was shocked finding the Dr. Mehta she was hoping to see was none other than Parnika. The one she hated the most had choice to save her life or just rot and die. She shivered at the later thought as it brought her back to the present from the thoughts.

“So what do you plan to do? We can use the GKT on smaller ones but it’s not safe enough to use two procedures at once. Don’t you think it would be a huge blunder? The chances are as low as 10%.” Parnika lays back on her chair and rubs her forehead.

“I know Pari, but we don’t have any other option. I can’t do this without your help and expertise. Usually, I would refuse taking on such cases but seeing her perseverance and hope to live I decided to give it a try. She has already agreed to take this plan forward no matter what the result.” Dr Chunawala tries to convince Parnika who wasn’t in a state of mind to decide anything yet. Her mind was filled with all sorts of thoughts from, Should I let her die? Why to save someone who just tried to ruin my life? Anyway, she has no time to live even if I refuse. I won’t have it in my guilt even if I refuse. As there’s no chance for it to turn of successful even if she agrees on it. But on the other side, I can’t just refuse my duty as a doctor just because I hold a personal grudge with patient. Patient is just a patient and nothing else for a doctor. How can I be so selfish?

She moves her hands through her hair in frustration and sighs. “I know we have something that would stop you from making the decision. I know I have always been nothing but trouble for you. But I know you so much that you won’t let your personal feelings come in between. I know there’s little to none chance of me surviving after this procedure. I am taking this plan ahead only because it just benefits me either way. If I live its great, kudos to both of you and the teams but if I die, it’ll be just quick death for me. It’d be a lot better than dying slowly and gradually day by day. I hope you don’t hate me that much to let me die the later way.” Miral places her hand on Parnika’s and looks at her in the eye.

In that moment, all of Parnika’s hate feeling vanished into thin air and all if was left was sympathy and care. She smiles at her and agrees for the procedure. Dr Chunawala wonders what Miral just blabbered but he decides to ignore it for now and heads straight back to work.

Chapter Thirty Five

CHAPTER THIRTY FIVE

A few weeks passed and Miral had now started to worry about her reports. She received a notification about some complication in her reports which lead to Dr Chunawala delaying the meeting so he could discuss about it with his peers.

It wasn’t everyday you get such a unique medical condition in any patient. Dr Chunawala wanted to be assured before he could say anything to Miral. It took him a few weeks to come upon a conclusion and decided to call Miral for a visit. Miral used to feel depressed and often forget things from her past. She already had fainted once in the bathroom when Jay was at work. Somehow she had handled her condition on her own till now. But as days were passing the situation had started to worsen up. The medicines that were given weren’t effective anymore it seemed.

“Miss Miral Jain, whatever I’ll tell you now, please think before you act on it. Your brain scans showed multiple tiny places where tumor cells had spread and started growing. Also, we found 3 major tumors, sizeable enough to be removed by surgery.”

“I can’t say if it can be cured totally and stopped or not but one thing I can say is I can attempt my best. This is one of the most challenging cases of my entire medical career. Hence, I am being totally open with you. There’s mere 10% chance of everything being totally back normal again. If you want to go for the procedure.” Dr Chunawala was never this serious, his face had more of worries than sympathy right now. He had never attempted any surgery of this level alone.

“So what you want me to do? What are my options here? Don’t tell me that my visit here and all the efforts were in vain.” Miral tried to speak clearly holding back her tears. “I know you are a very strong lady. Hence I am even telling you about the options. Usually we never attempt anything with such bad probabilities. We know what would be the outcome but still seeing your hope and perseverance of finding a cure I am suggesting you these options.” He brings out a file from his drawer and opens it.

“There’s an option to remove all of them using Gamma knife therapy. Its an extremely advanced procedure and something which I don’t specialise in. The chances are insignificant but this is the only viable solution which can give what you want.” He explains the procedure showing the chart.

“You said, it’s not something you specialise in. So does that mean you would recommend someone else?” Curious and worried Miral tries to hold composure without bursting into tears. “Uhm yes, don’t worry. I know one such person. Dr Mehta is a commendable neurosurgeon. It’s the best you can find in whole India for this procedure.”

“So where will I find Dr Mehta?”

“Oh you don’t need to worry about that. Dr Mehta works here and used to be my student. I’d fix your appointment as soon as it’d be possible, If you agree to go ahead with this procedure. I can start preparing if everything goes as planned and you agree.” Dr Chunawala closes the file and lays back in his chair.

“What if I refuse to opt for the procedure?” Miral knew the chances of operation being successful, but she wanted to know the chances if she refuses to get treated.

“Can’t comment on any fix timing for it. Depending upon the growth of tumor, it can be anywhere between a few months to a year at max.” The reply from Doctor weirdly brings smile on Miral’s face. “Ohkay doctor, I am ready to take the procedure. Please send me the details and funding needed so I can start arranging for it.”

Back at home, Miral wanted to tell Jay everything but something inside her was keeping her from telling the truth. She didn’t want to spoil the happy moments by telling the truth of her condition and be the reason for his sadness. On the other hand, Jay had no idea about what Miral was planning. He often used to go through her files and belongings to find out what she had been doing all this time. He was still waiting for her to tell her he truth herself. Somehow Jay understood her reason to keep it a secret. She didn’t want to accept her condition, or maybe she didn’t want anyone to sympathise for her, he wondered. It felt just like Parnika, when she cared for everyone but never wanted to come out as a weak in front of anyone including even Jay himself.

“So, you haven’t yet told me what’s your story about Miral? What’s so special that you’re keeping it a secret from me. It’s just getting me curious.” Jay lays back on the couch looking at Miral. He was just back from the work and had dinner. There was some free time before he could head back to bed. Miral often used to stay up late at nights and keep working on her book. Jay always used to wonder what she’s writing about?

At one side she was on verge of death and other side she was toiling had to finish this book. “Let me satisfy your curiosity for once. I know else you won’t let me type in peace.” Miral keeps the laptop aside and sits straight looking at Jay.

“The story is about a young girl, who gets caught up with an illness at a very young age. She someone survives from its first attack thinking that it’s all over for good but later as she grows up it realises that the disease was just right there all the time. It was growing with her and growing much stronger this time. It’s a story about her who just decides to fight against the circumstances and leave her mark in this world.” The way Miral narrated the plot felt like it was her own story. She wanted to write her own story before she succumbs to the illness.

For once Jay felt so proud for her. He actually wanted to just hug her and support her in this goal of hers. He never had felt so deeply about any friend before. But he never wanted Miral to feel that all of this was just sympathy. Her strength somehow was giving him a reason to get up and fight back from his own situation which lead him into the quicksand of depression.

Little they had knowledge about what was about to happen next as another situation was just about to land and knock on their door. The next morning changed was going to change their lives.

Chapter Thirty Four

CHAPTER THIRTY FOUR

It had been three months of Miral overtaking his life now. Everything was going on as if it was a fairytale. It felt fine to Jay as he thought his idea of just playing along was working very well until one call changed his mind. Jay was walking out of his room when he noticed Miral’s phone ringing on the table beside. Miral often used to sleep with Jay these days.

She wanted to stay as close to Jay as possible and just replace Parnika in his life. She was so mad at seeing her pictures with his family on the walls. She was so determined to win from her this time that she didn’t even bother to care if someone would actually love her back. For Jay it was all play until that call changed his world, shaking the land beneath his legs.

Miral was in the shower hence Jay never would’ve attended the call but he decided to pickup as he saw the caller name, ‘Dr Danish Chunawala.’. Dr Danish Chunawala was Parnika’s mentor and her only senior in the J.K.Shah hospital. He was the reason Parnika headed on the Health Campaign. “Hello Dr, It’s Jay here.” He picks up the call. “Oh...I didn’t know that….Yes...Yes, sure….I’ll ask her to call you back….Please don’t tell her I know about this now….Yes, I understand….Okay...bye.” The expression Jay’s face was like the sage who just had got the boon of enlightenment.

He quickly rushes in to the guest room and starts looking for something in Miral’s belongings. He stumbles upon a file in the drawer. He sits on the bed and opens it. As he continues to read, it blows his mind. Suddenly there’s a feeling of guilt that comes over him. He begins to hate himself for a moment, but then he decides to atone for his mistakes. He decides not to play along with Miral anymore. Suddenly, he wanted to get serious and actually care for her as she had been doing all this while.

He quickly places the file back in its place and heads for the work. Miral gets from the shower and finds 3 missed calls from Dr Chunawala. She quickly calls back to find that her appointment with the Doctor was fixed. Dr Chunawala was a renowned Oncologist and surgeon. Miral had been recommended to the Doctor by her family doctor in Australia. She had been here especially to meet him and find the answers for her questions. Dr Chunawala had been away due to his health reasons. Now, he’s back after all this time, Miral couldn’t afford to waste time anymore. She quickly dresses up and heads to the J.K.Shah hospital.

Miral knocks on the door as there’s a voice, “Come in please!.” from inside. Dr Chunawala was now in his 50s, salt and pepper hair, loose skin on cheeks but his eyes still showed that confidence that he was known for. Dr Chunawala had a record in never letting any of his patients die due to cancer. He used to identify the threats and treat his patients before it could get worse. He was Miral’s only hope now.

Miral had brain tumor which had now spread in places. She previously was operated for the tumor when she was a young teenager. At that time, she thought that it was all over. But a few years later, while being on an assignment she fainted. She was taken to the hospital to find out that the tumor had has started growing back and this time it was not just one,but many tiny ones. The tumor cells somehow had now spread and this time it was serious enough for most doctors to quit upon her.

It was like finding a god for Miral when she came to know about Dr Chunawala. She didn’t care if she had to wait for the last day but this time she didn’t want to take any chance. She hands over her file to Doctor who was now reading it very carefully. “I don’t know what to say here. I can’t promise you anything dear but there’s one thing I can do for sure.” He closes the file and hands it back to Miral. “I can try my best. In your past surgery it seems somehow a little tumor body was left unidentified which resulted in the spread later. We need some advance scans to find out how serious it is now and what can we do about it. You need to give me a week’s time to come up on a conclusion. I am sorry I couldn’t attend you earlier due to my own health reasons.”

“It’s okay doctor. I had lost hope anyways when I got to know about it. I got a little happy when out family doctor referred to you. I have no expectations anymore to be honest. But I just want to give it a try instead of accepting the defeat.” Miral smiles at the doctor and walks out of the room. Later on there are few tests and other medical procedures that she finishes before heading back home.

Back at Shah residence the winds seemingly had changed their directions for Miral. Jay had now started caring for her like back in day he used to for Parnika. For Miral it was a sweet victory as she had finally won a place in his heart and Parnika couldn’t stop her from achieving that. She couldn’t wait for the day when Parnika see’s her with Jay. She wanted to shout back at her face and see the expression of defeat on her face.

All this while Jay feels a weird ray of happiness on Miral’s face. He wonders if because of him paying more attention to her. He so wanted to hug her and caress her. He wanted to make her last days on earth a blessing. He wanted to confront her about the meeting with Doctor but didn’t. He wanted Miral to tell the truth herself. There must be some reason for her to hide the truth, he wonders.

Miral’s happiness had no bounds seeing Jay caring back for her. She just wanted to rush in his arms and tell him the truth. But one thing Miral hated than anything the most was sympathy. She didn’t want anyone to love just just because she’s not much time left to live. She never asked or wanted sympathy and it was the only reason she fled away from her home in Australia to find the cure here alone and all by herself.

She was afraid if Jay would leave her after knowing the truth or much worse, love her just showing the sympathy. But she feels that she can tell him the truth seeing that he really had started to care for her. All she wanted to do is just wait for a week to see what Doctor’s analysis turns out to be.
