What makes heroes different from villains?
I've been pondering on this question for a very long time now. If you glance at it, in essence both heroes and villains are cut from the same cloth then what is it that makes them so different from each other. In almost every other story on the planet, heroes are considered good and villains are bad. The question remains, what makes one a hero and what makes one a villain?
When you try sorting out the world and it's population. There's a set of population which drives everyone else. These people have an ambition, a goal that they're desperate to achieve at any cost. This madness to achieve their targets at any possible cost is what makes them the population that changes the world. Now depending on the level of madness they can be either at the peak or at the level of general populous. Since not everyone is ready to pay the cost that their desires demand.
But again, if both heroes and villains want to fulfill their desires at any cost, what makes them different? Key difference is that the mass supports the hero and opposes the villain. The strongest here out of the both automatically becomes a villain whether he agrees to it or not. If you try to ask why? The reason is quite simple. Envy, jealousy, survival instinct, call if whatever you fancy. When you see someone else achieving way more than you do. The internal comparison steals the joy of your achievements and starts comparing with the best available around you. Slowly the logic goes out of the picture and desires take hold over thoughts.
Heroes and Villains are both powerful drivers of society and excellent in their fields. We know that one who gains mass support becomes the hero and other becomes the villain. There's one more angle to this, villains can hold their own to reach the top hence hero always comes second and to topple the villain he has to take support from the mass. Once villain reaches the top, mass starts harming the top performer out of sheer jealousy and the basic issue of haves vs have nots. Villains become villains because they try to safeguard their gains and in due process harm a lot of people around them.
Hero takes advantage of that and gains public approval becoming a messiah. Nature basically abhors outliers. Nature is basically this weird amalgamation of systems that seek growth and balance at the same time. Each time either one is thrown out of balance it forms a hero and a villain. Too much growth harms the balance and too much balance kills the growth. That's the norm of the nature, hence evolution is formed in a way that balances growth and stability aka balance in the populace otherwise life is dead. If you understand this formula you'd know why certain people who were once heroes and now are villains and vice versa.
